We the undersigned call upon our elected and agency officials and leaders to preserve and protect all of Mount Prospect Park’s public green park space, and shift skateboard facility construction to already-paved space.

New York City’s green spaces vitally support our physical health and mental wellbeing. The deepening climate crisis affects us all – and will impact our young people the longest. Since the project to construct a poured-concrete skate facility on historic public green space in Mount Prospect Park was announced, New Yorkers have experienced record-breaking heat waves, tree-killing drought, and witnessed our parklands actually catching fire.

Paving over Mount Prospect Park's shaded and cooling neighborhood green space contradicts sound urban planning and City environmental policies. Building a regional-scale poured-concrete skate facility on the park is destructive, alarming, and unnecessary. The construction would damage community wellbeing.

We urge officials to resolve the unnecessary conflict, and improve recreational skating options by shifting resources to nearby already-paved space -- including by revitalizing and rebuilding dilapidated paved spaces and adding green features skaters may request and enjoy, contributing to a healthier future for all our communities.
